There was a woman who worked in a facility where primates were taught to communicate using an interface like a touch screen. One day, while deep in thought and working at her desk, she heard the familiar sounds of the apes being fed. The primates were excited and vocalized “in their native tongue”. She thought to herself “They are having grapes today.” It was a shock to her that she had picked up on their native language. This story very much reminds me of the experience of an intuitive hit, or hearing an animal talk to you.
Recently, I, and my dog, watched my 8-year-old grandson for the weekend. He loves my dog Callie. At the end of the weekend, my dog was feeling the same way about him. As she laid on the floor, belly exposed, with him gently stroking her tummy, I heard “Can he come home with us?”. As soon as it popped into my head I answered, aloud “No, sorry, he can’t come home with us.” I wondered if I had heard her or if I was thinking that is what she was thinking. Either way I was picking up on her feelings, but in the moment I dismissed it and felt I generated the thought and words.
About two weeks later, Callie and I went to see my grandson and his family again. Shortly into the drive I explained to her we were only going for overnight, not like last time where we were there for several days which was a little too long in the city for my ranch dog. After I finished talking about our short stay, I heard “Is that boy going to be there?”. To me, the surprise of hearing those words was just like the woman at the primate research facility when she realized she understood the apes vocalizations. I was nowhere near thinking anything along those lines.
Because we are all unique, intuition can present itself in a number of ways. In the same way as the woman researcher, and my experience with my dog, I have found that when I am surprised by a thought it is a "slam dunk" indication my intuition, or an animal, is speaking to me.
